At GNUPC.COM, we believe in providing top-quality PCs ready for Linux, at very affordable prices. We currently offer two models, the MightyMite 450, and the MANIC 700. Both PCs are built from name brand components, and configured specifically to run Linux. Each computer includes 7 major distributions of Linux (nothing is pre-installed, but we do offer installation service for $25), and the Tucows/Linux Central 4 CD Application Set.

We use only the highest quality Linux proven parts to build our PCs. This includes 3Com ethernet cards, Gigabyte motherboards, Enlight cases and ATI graphics cards.

However, we do not include a modem or a sound card. This is for a few reasons:

1. Linux-based PCs fall into the role of server under a majority of circumstances. Servers don't need sound, and are usually either networked or have some other means of transferring data. A modem would need to be removed, and hence go to waste. A sound card would go unused, and again money and resources would be wasted.
2. Linux-compatible modems can be purchased very affordably, usually for well under $100. There are some issues of compatibility, so be sure to check the current documentation for your distribution. Most modems will work, with only a few exceptions, specifically Winmodems. These modems require Windows-based software to run and few have Linux equivilants. The same is true about sound cards, but in this case sound cards can be bought for less than $20. Look for a sound blaster compatible cards, and avoid cards that are "designed specifically for Windows". Also remember that most distributions of Linux will need to be re-installed (or the kernel re-compiled) to add sound support. More info can be found with your Linux distributions.
3. Sound cards and Modems vary greatly in features and price. We would rather let you pick a sound card or modem that fits your needs and budget than include one that may not fit your needs, and increase the price of the unit considerably.
